On the search for steelhead we cross paths with large trout on a regular basis. As the steelhead become natural feeders after the spawn we find challenging fly fishing conditions. The need to match the hatch for steelhead has lead us down the path of trophy trout tactics. There are several world class trout rivers and streams within an hour of the office. We have taken these strategies and applied them to trout only fisheries with great success taking the larger trout in the holes and targeting them. Big trout can become very slow and lazy eating bigger meals at one time to sustain themselves and also to stay under cover. We have found these big trout are meat eaters or baby trout killers for the most part. Our large streamers flies and tube flies will bring some amazing action if slow dredged through the deep runs and holes.There are days when there are no hook ups yet a few follow ups that will leave any fisher shaky handed. We are starting to see our tube flies hung in brown trout jaws and engulfed by some giant rainbows in tail water and tidewater fly fisheries. If the water is cold we will run an 18 inch floro carbon leader to a smaller trail fly like the Mid Riff Soft Hackle or Nympho trout fry.
